Someone once told me that you have to go to Step class seven times before you can master the moves. Today was not my first rodeo, but each step class is a humbling experience. Watching seasoned steppers moving through class is awe-inspiring. And all I want to do is move in time with them.
My exercise watch was pleased with my performance. It is truly hard work to move up and down that bench over and over again. Whether it’s a basic step, a jump shot, or a straddle, the class works not only your body but also your mind. The amount of focus required to stay upright is not insignificant. But every time I successfully get through a step routine, I feel an absurd sense of pride.
Kathleen teaches 8 AM Step classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (and Retro Step on Saturday mornings at 9:30). I have no idea how she can simultaneously do all of the moves AND call out each step – her energy seems limitless. She does a great job motivating you to keep moving your feet (and engaging your arms and core).
It’s not easy walking into your first step class; it’s downright intimidating. But, if you put your pride aside, you’re in for a solid workout. And by class seven, you’ll nail the routines.
