How Group Fitness Classes Can Help You Achieve Your Goals

Posted by: Siegel JCC on Tuesday, January 31, 2023

Often, we tend to think of fitness as an individual journey. And that's true, to a certain extent—after all, everyone comes to the gym with different goals, bodies, and abilities. But while an independent workout habit works for some people, it's not the best choice for everyone. Particularly for individuals who struggle with motivation or could use some extra support, group fitness classes provide an effective (and fun!) way to achieve your fitness goals.

Still on the fence? Here, we'll run through some of the benefits of participating in group fitness:

Find Accountability

Almost everyone can relate to having days when the thought of working out is somewhat less than appealing. At times like that, having an external incentive—like knowing that you're expected to show up for a class—can give you the extra little push you need to get off the couch and change into your workout clothes. Some gyms even use online reservation systems for their group exercise classes, meaning that you can sign yourself up ahead of time (when you're feeling a little more energized) to hold your spot.

Push Yourself

Working out with other people provides both a sense of competition and camaraderie, both of which are extremely effective motivators for many people. Whichever one you thrive on, being around other people while you're exercising can help you push through your workout even when it gets challenging. In a group fitness setting, you're more likely to be motivated to keep up with your classmates, and you can use their energy to stay positive and focused. In fact, research has shown that people tend to perform better and exercise longer when working out in the presence of a partner.

Try Something New

Anyone who has been working out for an extended period of time knows how easy it is to fall into a rut. Arguably one of the biggest benefits of group exercise classes is that they allow you to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with different types of physical activity.

Whether you're a longtime fitness buff, a complete newbie, or somewhere in between, trying out a new type of exercise in a group fitness class can be extremely helpful for your overall health and your relationship with exercise. For example, athletes that specialize in a specific form of exercise (like running or powerlifting) might find that attending group yoga classes are a good way to cross-train on their rest days. Alternatively, people who find gym workouts boring or monotonous might enjoy the novelty and challenge of a Zumba or barre class. And for those who are just beginning their fitness journey, group classes are a great way to get an idea of what's out there and what they enjoy.

Build Your Community

The modern world is a busy place, and it's often difficult to maintain a regular fitness habit while also making time for friends and socializing. Attending group fitness classes with a friend is a great way to spend time together. Plus, they're also a fun opportunity to meet new people and expand your community (especially because you've already got one thing in common!).

Benefit From Professional Guidance

From yoga to Pilates to Zumba and more, group exercise classes are taught by certified fitness instructors who know how to help you work toward your goals while staying safe and providing encouragement. In addition to leading you through a warm-up and cool-down that are appropriate for the type of exercise you're doing, group fitness instructors also provide guidance, tips, and sometimes hands-on adjustments. Particularly if you're trying out a new form of exercise, having that extra encouragement and support is often invaluable.

How To Get Started

If you've never attended a group exercise class before, it's normal to feel nervous or not know where to start at first. To begin with, think about your fitness goals—do you have a specific aim in mind, like increasing flexibility, strength, and/or endurance? Or are you more interested in finding a fun way to move your body? It might also be helpful to talk to the staff at your gym about your fitness level, as well as any health issues or injuries, and ask them for recommendations.

If the idea of jumping straight into a group fitness class is still a bit overwhelming, ask a friend to accompany you for moral support. Or consider starting small and scheduling a personal training session or private lesson first, so that you can get a head start and get used to working out with someone else around.
